Sunset Cinematic Headshots

Solved The Catchlight Issue and Came Out with Another Issue

Written on the 17th of July, 2022

I wanted to correct my mistakes in the previous cinematic headshot photoshoot I did with Danah Hamdan. This time, I hired model Lucy Lofting for the photoshoot. The catchlight issue during the last photoshoot I had is solved. However, the hair light was so intense that her blonde hair was blown out and clipped. In fairness, it adds a sense of a cinematic feel. However, retaining as many details as possible in an image is desired.

Shooting during sunset is very difficult. The duration of the sunset was brief, and the background was so dark that I had to bring some of it up in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. If I were dealing with a client, I would have chosen a better time for the photoshoot. The issue here in Kuwait is the weather. If it were noon, the weather would be hot, reaching fifty degrees Celsius. The best timing would be in the afternoon and one to two hours before the sunset when the weather is much more acceptable.

I also had an issue where the equipment almost fell on Lucy because the weather was windy. Sandbag would be a solution; however, an assistant would be a better alternative.
