Natural Light Versus Speedlight

Written on the 19th of July, 2022

I mentioned before that I got into the habit of shooting portraits after each cinematic headshot photoshoot. After my cinematic headshot photoshoot with model Lucy Lofting, I did a portrait photoshoot with her using natural light and a Speedlight. The sun was setting, so I did not have to use high-sync speed to get a good exposure, as you can see from the images below. I shot the first image with a Speedlight. You can see that the image is contrasty, especially on the right side of the nose. It is a beautiful image of Lucy. However, I preferred the natural light as the light was soft and directional, giving Lucy a low contrast ratio, which looked more pleasing on her.

Hint: You can tell I used a Speedlight by looking at the catchlight in the eyes. You can see in the first image the octabox-shaped catchlight in Lucy's eyes.
