That Awful Glare

Can You Fix Eyeglasses Glare in Photoshop?

Written on the 2nd of March, 2021

The eyes are the window to the soul. They are the most magical thing in a portrait and the first thing that draws our eyes. We should spend our time to make sure we get them tack sharp and in focus in-camera. However, sometimes those beautiful eyes are going to be in focus but concealed by eyeglasses glare. It is so distracting and can ruin a beautifully shot image. Never fear. I am here to help you solve this issue.

I remember purchasing the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G lens at the end of 2018. Back then, I read a lot of reviews about it. It was the perfect lens, especially for my Nikon D3400 cropped APS-C sensor, as its acts as 127.5mm. The bokeh and the narrow field of view for a portrait shoot were magical. It was expensive but was one of the best investments I made in my photography career.

On the same day of purchasing the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G lens, I did a trial shoot with my younger brother. I got an interesting-looking image; however, the glare on his eyeglasses was distracting.

Here the image of him straight out of the camera

It looks astonishing, aside from the bad composition and the pose. I loved the lighting, the background, the colours, and the contrast.

I did some retouching, and here is the final result.

The Gear I Used

Here are my methods of removing glare out of the eyeglasses
  • Adjust the light properly during the shoot and capture it correctly in-camera. Prevention is better than cure.
  • Shoot your subject with and without the glasses. Then mask the eyes in Photoshop.
  • Clone the eyes, especially if one of the eyes is unaffected by the glare.
  • Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer.
  • Dodge and Burn for luminosity in the glared area. Then adjust the colour using a new layer with Color Blend mode to match the surrounding colour.
